A wasted work day winds itself down, once again. I spend most of the day dealing with a virus alert on my laptop. After a few scans, reboots, research, and sacrifice of a virgin (the most difficult) and hours of effort; it was determined that my "virus" was in fact a false positive. Corrupted scanning engine and/or pattern file continued to identify a Trojan although no file(s) were identified, just an entry in the Risk History. In short Symantec had it out for me. On the plus side, during the course of the effort my PC Support buddy Mike was here to figure out what was going on. So while we watched scans crank and little else, we talked poker. He's a long-time member of the ole NDPT. We talked about Tri-State and various home tourneys, and the ever popular Shuman Cash Game. It was also good to hear some additional perspectives on how the WSOP Final Table looks. So, despite the downtime in the computing world, a good poker discussion filled the void! Thanks Mike!
I came across the following post by AlCantHang http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/poker-from-the-rail/bloggers-on-the-rail/railing-big-cash-game (which cited a write up over at PokerNews.com.) It covered a high dollar game on Full Tilt, in which I'll never find myself, but put into perspective some of the "bad beat" tales I have told and retold here on my blog. In short I think I should fess up and admit that "things ain't so bad for me." Talk about ouch!!! Go read it for yourself. And thanks to Al for posting it.
And while I was out there reading his blog, he reminded me of something else that I read yesterday but got sidetracked. My sincerest of apologies go out to MY GIRLFRIEND!!! Clonie Gowen won the 2008 World Poker Open Championship in Tunica, MS!!! The event had only 107 players (at $5,000 each) and was held at the Gold Strike Casino. Clonie, took it down for $183,224, further winning my admiration. : ) According to the post this win inches her closer to the magic number of $1 Million in career tourney winnings. Congratulations Clonie! (pssst, call me!)
Tonight is Eagles Night. We go up every week for the winner take all drawing, along with the whole gang. Yes, Robert... this is what "degenerate gambler feels like." Hope to see you all there. Tomorrow night is a South home football game, so Whitney cheers, and we'll cheer her/them from the stands. Hopefully things'll warm up a bit. I know how cold it was on Monday for the JV game. I lost feeling in the toes there for a while. Saturday night some of you fellow degenerates will converge with me on the Yanok's Tournament. There's always a good time to be had at this game, and this one is uber important as "both" games of the night will be qualifiers for the year-end game. I REALLY need to put one in the WIN column to beef up my meager chip stack for the final game. Can I get a little luv!
The online grind has returned to what passes for normal. I've been showing a profit for the last several hundred hands on Bodog, I'm happy to report. Meager sums here people, don't plan on rolling me in the parking lot for some extra scratch!

WSOP Main Event 2b or not 2b from way far away...
We had a short practice session tonight for baseball, so I was back in time to start my catch-up session on the WSOP Main Event Day 2b.
Somewhere along the line I realized my girlfriend Clonie Gowen was still in the Series albeit sitting on a short stack! BUT in bigger news she opted to leave the hallowed halls of the RIO and wander over to the Bellagio Cup IV, and play in the $5,000 NLHE event. According to the boys over at http://pokerati.com/2008/07/09/clonies-big-score-second-chance/ she bested the field of 235 players to take down a $437,775 payday!!! http://pokerati.com/author/danm/ posts that they should start hanging out all the time like best friends... but honestly Clonie, remember I was offerin' up a shoulder to cry on when times were tough over in another corner of Las Vegas. I'm here, don't forget me!?! But congratulations on the victory! I'm only just now sitting down to see where things stand in Day 2b, and I'm crossing my fingers for you!
Sorry gang a rotten work week required and demanded a trip to the Eagles for a minor skirmish with the accursed Jack Daniels. He and his evil horde will eventually be defeated. I for one will not rest... No, really sleep is optional!

He made mention of a hand involving Emanuel Seal and some other unknown player in which the unknown got it all in with QQ preflop, wherein the flop came 555, then an Ace fell on the turn for Mr. Seal but was invalidated by the rivered case 5!!! Joe Hachem, good guy that he is, had to call the "unknown" back to the table for the chop!!! : ) Honestly, how many times have you wished that happened for you?
Ahhhh hell, as I catch up, MeanGene also announces the fate of my beloved... Clonie has been eliminated, when her 8's were bested by 10's. Sorry. : ( No, really I'm not a stalker, honest.
Jerry Yang, defending champion, has also been eliminated, but as reported, he exited with class, shaking the hands of ALL those at his table and wishing "good luck to everyone." ( I know Allman, 'it's something you say, not something you mean.'
The agile, pretty Tiffany Michelle crossed the 100K chip mark just over 6 hours ago. I say agile based on pictures of her "perched" in her chair while at the tables. Okay, I'll stop.
Hmmm, Hevad Khan is keeping his mouth shut, and is just under the 100K mark.
According to http://my.pokernews.com/MarcC/ when Johnny Chan's not happy "nearly" no one's happy. Johnny's complained about the chairs in the Brasilia room as being "the worst in poker history!" Meanwhile behind him another player hit a royal in the same friggin' chair. Go figure...
Not long after, Mr Chan chips up to the 130K level, according to yet another of my fave bloggers Shamus... http://my.pokernews.com/Shamus/
Oh super, in Shamus' same breath, he announces the demise of one Shannon Elizabeth!
Jean-Robert Bellande has eliminated Howard Lederer. JRB's pocket 9's held up against Howard's AKos.
Back to back picture posts on the PokerNews.com live reporting confirm to me that two lovely ladies still remain, Evelyn Ng and Jennifer Harman. Okay, they've both got much more than their looks on their side!
And yet again, round and round up and down Gus Hansen is still in there, now, back up to 102K.
Argh... someone has eliminated Ms. Isabelle Mercier!
About 3 hours ago, Evelyn Ng chipped up to 116K on AKos!!! (Honestly NDPT'ers quit bitchin' about that hand!)
Just under 2 hours ago, Antonio Esfandiari was eliminated when his pocket cowboys met pocket ladies and then it all went south on a "turned" queen. His opponent Paul Andrzejewski apologized... to which Antonio replied, "Never say sorry, it's poker."
And just like that... I'm all caught up! Hmmm, this bloggin' thing ain't so hard! Okay, sorry folks (guys and gals alike) I envy you the gig, but appreciate the job that you're ALL doing!!!

WSOP Day 1b and 1c...
I'm only just now getting back to take a look at how things are going in the 39th Annual Main Event of the WSOP. I spent most of my day yesterday in Vienna again for the baseball tournament. Festivities from the day before were "postponed" until today due to the rain. It was like monsoon season around here for the past couple of days. We needed to dry the boys out. Anyway, we are done with the tournament. No more for us... we weren't doing so hot. But together we've identified some areas that we need to work on as a team, and some for the individuals as well. They are a good bunch of kids and we want to help make them all better ball players. The goal is to make 'em better than we found 'em. Somewhere in there's a life lesson I think.
Anyway, back to the WSOP. On Day 1b 1,158 players started the day but only 615 survived. The numbers are lower than the day before, and low in general BUT let's not go jumping to conclusions folks, there's no reason to start pannicking just yet. Notable bustouts on the day were Humberto Brenes, Jamie Gold, Greg Raymer, Kenny Tran, Scott Fischman, Dewey Tomko, Daniel Negreanu, Ted Forrest, Lee Watkinson, and Kristy Gazes.
Patrik Antonius rode high throughout the day but on the last hand of the day he took a big hit and was dropped to 64,125 in chips. My boy Erick "E-Dog" Lindgren is still in the fight, along with Thor Hansen, Hoyt Corkins, Erik Seidel, Vanessa Rousoo, 'Captain' Tom Franklin, Kathy Liebert, and David Grey.
As for Day 1c, 1,928 players began but only 1,026 survived. Notable bustouts on Day 1c included Larry Flynt, Huckleberry Seed, Max Pescatori, Mike Sexton, Gavin Griffin, Mimi Tran, Marco Traniello, JC Tran, TJ Cloutier, Paul Darden, Tony G, Marcel Luske, and Sam Farha.
Notable players who still remain include: Evelyn Ng, Nenad Medic, Brian 'sbrugby' Townsend, Shawn 'Sheiky' Sheikhan, Chris Moneymaker, Rolf Slotboom, Mike Matusow, Clonie Gowen, and Isabelle Mercier.

Saturday update WSOP
Event 34 - $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha w/Rebuys has been won by Layne Flack. The bracelet and $577,725 are all his. I know there's plenty to dispute about it being the year of the "big-name" pro, but there are an awful lot of them climbing to the top of the poker pyramid this time around! But this is still a game of the individual and therefore, congratulations Layne! The temptress Clonie Gowen continues to put her name out there for me to see among those who cash out. She finished 34th in the event. She knows I read all these results... Shameless. : ) But now I refuse to acknowledge you unless you're higher in the cashout listing.
Event 35 - $1,500 Seven Card Stud has crowned its winner Mike Rocco, for a cool $135,753. He bested the field of 381 players to take it down. Congratulations.
Event 36 - $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em will resume today at 2:00pm PDT when the final nine come together competing for the first place prize of $610,304.
Event 37 - $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low World Championship will also reconvene today with the remaining 18 of the original 235 fighting it out for the top prize of $535,687. A whopping 7 of the 18 are Full Tilt sponsored, including Mike Matusow, who is currently in 2nd place.
Event 38 - $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em enters Day 2 today with 63 of the original 605 players remaining. Pssst although short-stacked Clonie's still in there!
Getting underway today will be Event 39 - $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em and Event 40 - $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw.

Dario wins #31, Annie leads #33, and more about Clonie : )
Event 31 - $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em Six-handed has been won by Dario Minieri. This makes his first WSOP bracelet and a $528,418 payday. Congratulations, and sorry about the whole Harry Potter thing. : )
Event 32 - $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em is down to the final table of 9 from the original 2,304. They will reconvene today at 2:00pm PDT. A top prize of $573,734 awaits.
Event 33 - $5,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low World Championship is STILL grinding away as of now. They are down to the final 10 of the initial 261 starters. Plenty of star power in this one, with Annie Duke currently in the chip lead, and still in the running Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer, Marcel Luske, and David Benyamine. I hope we get to see a little of this final table in the ESPN coverage as well! Oh and incidentally GO ANNIE!!!

WSOP update, and NDPT #8 tonight
Event 21 - $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Scott Seiver won his first WSOP bracelet and the $755,891 first prize. Congratulations on a long, hard-fought battle.
Event 22 - $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. Jens Voertmann finally bested the field of 414 entrants to take down the top spot, WSOP bracelet and $298,253 for his trouble. Sadly, Marcel Luske could not battle his way back and busted in 3rd place. Hopefully, his win of $110,264 will soften the blow just a bit. Jennifer Harman finished up in 8th position with $30,851 as well.
Event 23 - $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em has narrowed the field down to the final 9 from the original starting 1,344. The $507,613 prize awaits one of them, as action gets underway again today at 2:00pm PDT.
Event 24 - $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em/Omaha has whittled the pack down to the final 9 as well, from its starting 457. Most notable remaining at the final table and currently 2nd in chip count, is Allen Cunningham. This event will reconvene at 3:00pm PDT.
Event 25 - $10,000 Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em World Championship heads into Day 2 toay with 32 of the original 256 players remaining. A number of pros still remain in this heads up war, including Erick "E-Dog" Lindgren! He's on fire this year!!! Additionally, David Williams, Gavin Griffin, Kenny Tran, Robert Mizrachi, Sammy Farha, and Vanessa Selbst. (Sadly, Clonie Gowen went out in 60th place, but $14,438 kept her from leaving empty handed.) Clonie, if you're sad and need a shoulder to cry on... cheer_dad's here for you! : )
Event 26 - $1,500 Razz enters Day 2 with 104 of the initial 453 players remaining. They'll get under way today at 3:00pm PDT. The bracelet and $157,619 awaits the eventual winner. The current chip leader is Barry Greenstein. Not far behind him in 6th place is the Vanessa Rousso. Hang in there! She is another I would really like to see take down the WSOP bracelet this year. (Sorry Barry, but I'm sure you'll understand.)
Event 27 - $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em and Event 28 - $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha w/ Rebuys are on tap for today.
And then there's also this lesser known event known only to a select few of you as NDPT #8, that'll be a little further away from the Vegas glitz. That's right, cheer_dad plays host tonight to yet another gathering of the low-stakes and lower-standards crowd. The cards get in the air tonight beginning at 6:00pm EST. Last count had us at around 24 players. See you all real soon.
I'll also have to recap a little of the action from last night at the Yanok's poker night. Thanks to Brian and Shelley for being fantastic hosts. Big Red and I only made it for Game #2 of the night, but just couldn't really make anything materialise. We both made the final table, but just couldn't outlast the pack, with our short stacks. I got the remainder of mine in on a flush draw, with 2 callers, but there was no other spade to be found. To the rail I went. I'll have to find out how that ended up. In game #1 I believe JR (Uncle June) took it down, in a big way, but I think he has some commentary he wants to post up on this, so I think I'll let him do a guest post to recap the action that I wasn't there to see.

A number of pros still remain in this heads up war, including Erick "E-Dog" Lindgren! He's on fire this year!!! Additionally, David Williams, Gavin Griffin, Kenny Tran, Robert Mizrachi, Sammy Farha, and Vanessa Selbst. (Sadly, Clonie Gowen went out in 60th place, but $14,438 kept her from leaving empty handed.) Clonie, if you're sad and need a shoulder to cry on... cheer_dad's here for you! : )
Event 26 - $1,500 Razz enters Day 2 with 104 of the initial 453 players remaining. They'll get under way today at 3:00pm PDT. The bracelet and $157,619 awaits the eventual winner. The current chip leader is Barry Greenstein. Not far behind him in 6th place is the Vanessa Rousso. Hang in there! She is another I would really like to see take down the WSOP bracelet this year. (Sorry Barry, but I'm sure you'll understand.)
Event 27 - $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em and Event 28 - $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha w/ Rebuys are on tap for today.
And then there's also this lesser known event known only to a select few of you as NDPT #8, that'll be a little further away from the Vegas glitz. That's right, cheer_dad plays host tonight to yet another gathering of the low-stakes and lower-standards crowd. The cards get in the air tonight beginning at 6:00pm EST. Last count had us at around 24 players. See you all real soon.
I'll also have to recap a little of the action from last night at the Yanok's poker night. Thanks to Brian and Shelley for being fantastic hosts. Big Red and I only made it for Game #2 of the night, but just couldn't really make anything materialise. We both made the final table, but just couldn't outlast the pack, with our short stacks. I got the remainder of mine in on a flush draw, with 2 callers, but there was no other spade to be found. To the rail I went. I'll have to find out how that ended up. In game #1 I believe JR (Uncle June) took it down, in a big way, but I think he has some commentary he wants to post up on this, so I think I'll let him do a guest post to recap the action that I wasn't there to see.

Erick Lindgren takes the bracelet, and other WSOP goings on
Erick Lindgren (E-Dog) wins his FIRST ever WSOP bracelet!!! A little after 1AM Erick finally bested the field of 332 players to lay claim to $374,505 and the elusive WSOP bracelet in Event #4 $5,000 Mixed Hold'em (Limit/No Limit.) He and Justin Bonomo went heads up for approximately 40 hands before Erick was able to get Justin all-in. Justin had unfortunately made 2-pair (5's and 4's) but the same 4h on the turn had given Erick the straight. I started to post a "Go E-Dog!" earlier in the evening to the ShoutBox out on Pokernews.com while watching Shamus and shorton work their fingers to the bone, but then I thought better of it. No sense in jinxing it for him! But in the end congratulations E-Dog! It's been a long time coming, relish the victory! But why stop there...so many events yet to come.
Others easily recognized in the payout 36, included Roland (Hungry Like) de Wolfe, Howard Lederer, David Williams, Andy Bloch, Phil Laak, Michael Craig, and oh look honey that god-like Patrik Antonius made money in another one!
Event #3 $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em wrapped up last night at about the same time, with David Singer pocketing the $214,131 and laying claim to his first WSOP bracelet as well. In the final heads-up play Singer railed Jacobo Fernandez when he rivered the straight with his Q-4s to Jacobo's flopped 2-pair 7's and 3's. Congratulations David!
Event #5 $1,000 NLHE w/Re-buys finished up Day 2 last night and only the final table remains to be played out today, picking back up at a slightly delayed 3pm PDT. The final table of this event lacks the star-power of the other events in my mind. Not to diminish their standing or the win yet to come for one of the lucky nine, but the most recognizable names have already (again in my mind) been taken out, although they did cash in the event: the lovely and talented Clonie Gowen claimed 15th place and $28,940 for her trouble, and prior to that Daniel Negreanu, Nenad Medic (Event #1 winner), and John Juanda to name just a few. Rest assured when the bracelet is awarded though I'll congratulate them just the same. After all winning one of these events is a feat worthy of respect.
Event #6 $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better is STILL being played down to the final 9 (currently at 15.) That's some die hard poker folks! I'll continue to follow the action on this and let you know there's a winner, but again, this one doesn't have a lot of familiar faces either. Still, there is a top prize of $243,356 to be claimed.
Event #7 $2,000 NLHE will resume today, with the remaining 152 of the original 1,593 battling down to the final table.
Event #8 $10,000 World Championship Mixed Event will as well resume later today where the remaining 94 of 192 will reduce down to an eventual final table. Still among the hopeful for this one are Gus Hansen, Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey, Gavin Smith, Mike Sexton, Greg Raymer, Marcel Luske, Doyle Brunson, okay... there's a lot of pros! Okay a couple of the ladies remain too Vanessa Rousso and Katja Thater. : P
Two other events get underway today #9 $1,500 NLHE Six-handed, and #10 $2,500 Omaha/7-Card Stud Hi-Low-8 or Better. I'll keep you posted. Of course that'll all be dependent upon the fine folks doing the REAL WORK over at http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/. Thanks to you all.
